FACING YOUR OWN GOAL.
Ananth. I watched your game and I must say, you have a lot of quality. One habit holding your influence back: you face your own goal.
Start noticing when this happens.
Every time you receive the ball like this, you limit your options. You can’t see the field. You can’t see your teammates. And your progressive actions—the ones that actually move the game forward—are blocked.
The cheat code is simple: receive on a 90-degree angle.
This does two things. First, it shortens your turn. You don’t spin 180 degrees—you’re ready to face the field instantly. Second, it lets you see both the presser and the ball. Pressure only works when you’re blind to it. Open your body and suddenly the press hesitates.
Now, when you’re in the pocket between the lines, the half-turn is key. Position yourself slightly sideways. That angle lets you:
Threaten an inside pass.
Move behind the back line in one continuous action.
Force defenders to hesitate, neutralizing their press.
And here’s the reference point: the heart of the field. Wherever you are, orient yourself to see as much of the pitch as possible. Right side? See the left sideline. Left side? See the right. Center circle? Anchor yourself there. The more you see, the better your options.
Tie it together: half-turn, 90-degree angle, sideways body, heart of the field, neutralize pressure, continuous action.
Master this. Stop reacting. Start controlling. See more. Act faster. Influence everything. That’s how midfielders become game-changers.
