BALL BREAKS LINE.

At higher levels, creating chances is rarely about what you do on the ball.

It is about what you see when the line breaks.

Most attacking situations are decided in the moment a defender steps out of the line.

That is when space appears.

The problem is not recognizing the space.

It is reacting to it early enough.

THE LINE BREAK.

When the ball is played into a forward and the center back steps, the back line breaks vertically.

That movement creates space behind the line.

The rest of the defenders need to rebuild into a three behind the challenge.

But that reaction is not instant.

At most levels, defenders become ball-watching.

Because of that, the gap stays open longer than it should.

ACCESS THE GAP.

When the line breaks, the objective changes.

The goal is no longer to circulate the ball.

It is to punish the space behind the line.

There are two ways to access it.

Through a third man combination into the space behind.

Or directly into the gap with disguise.

Both require early recognition.

BODY POSITIONING.

Receiving on the same vertical line as the defender creates problems.

The pressure becomes straight and aggressive.

It closes both exits.

It forces you backwards.

When you step just beyond that line, the picture changes.

You can see both the ball and the defender.

The pressure becomes diagonal.

That gives you time to turn and play forward.

THE SECOND ACTION.

Even when you do not receive, the moment still belongs to you.

When the line breaks, the game behaves like a transition.

The defense is not set.

That is the cue to run.

Straight.

Forward.

Into the space at the top of the box.

THE WRONG FOCUS.

Most players continue to follow the ball.

They watch the play develop.

They react instead of anticipating.

This delay allows the defense to recover.

It also forces other players to occupy spaces that are not theirs.

When the ten does not arrive, the striker drops.

The structure becomes disconnected.

PRINCIPLE.

Chances are created when the line breaks.

Not after.

Recognize the moment.

Attack the space behind the line.

Position to receive forward.

Arrive in the second action.

That is how attacking midfielders create consistent output.
